Windows Hibernation mode is a feature in Windows that allows your computer to essentially turn off to save power with the advantage that you will be exactly where you left off when you come out of hibernation. When a computer is put into hibernation mode, the computer takes a snapshot of all the memory and the Windows settings and saves all this information on the hard disk of the computer. After the information is saved, the computer turns off. As stated above, a great benefit of this is that there is no need for power to maintain itself in the hibernation state. This is not the case in the standby mode which requires some power.

Windows 8 Needs to Improve
Update: Since this article was published, Windows 10 has been released to the public so find a Windows 10 key here and update your computer. While the system isn’t perfect, Microsoft has improved a lot of the features that were lacking on Windows 7 and 8.
Microsoft set out to release a single operating system for all devices. Disable Search Service in Windows 7 and 8
The Windows Search Service is the service in Windows 7 and 8 that replaced the Windows indexing service from previous versions of Windows. Essentially, the search service runs in the background and scans files and folders to record information about these files and folders. Then, when you need to perform a file search, it should run much faster due to these records of information that Windows has compiled. However, this improved file search speed comes at a cost of WSS (Windows Search Service) constantly running in the background using system resources. If your computer has enough power, I would recommend leaving this service alone. However, if you are starting to notice that your PC is slowing down, disabling this service will help you to regain some speed.

If you’re looking for a verdict on whether you should consider upgrading, this article will point out the most notable pros and cons.
Quick Tip: Finding Large Files in Windows 7
With some inspiration from Rick’s article about finding space hogs over at What’s on My PC, I figured I would post a quick tip on how to find large files using the Windows File Search feature. I want to add that the tool Rick talks about looks like a solid tool as well. I will be illustrating this in Windows 7, but the general concept will work in Windows 8.
Searching for Files larger than 1MB
Searching for large files in Windows is quite easy. In Windows 7, open up a Windows Explorer window. The icon looks like the following and it should be in your bottom task bar:
