I am a pretty big gamer. I have been known to get into both FPS games like counter-strike and battlefield and RTS games like command and conquer and Starcraft. To play these games the right way, a good gaming mouse is essential. If you are a serious gamer, you should not under-estimate the value of a good gaming mouse.
In the past, I would swear by the Logitech MX518 gaming mouse. However, this mouse has been discontinued and is becoming very hard to find. Due to this, I decided it was time to find another mouse. Looking around, the most obvious choice was the Logitech G400 Mouse
. The G400 is built in a very similar way to the MX518. The G400 feels very much like the MX518. The G400 does boast a few upgrades over the MX518. To start, the DPI has been upgraded to 3600. The cord on the G400 is lighter when compared to the MX518 which is a small improvement as well.
Overall though, after testing, I would not consider this mouse an upgrade to the MX518. I would just say that it is a suitable replacement.
G400 Feel
During my testing, the G400 felt very comfortable to me. I also noticed that the mouse movement was very predictable and precise. Comfort and accurate/precise movement, in my opinion, are what makes a good gaming mouse. The G400 also has a mouse3 and mouse4 button which can be customized. This is a nice extra feature, although most gaming mice have extra buttons of some sort.
G400 Problems
One problem I had with the G400 mouse, after a lot of wear and tear, was that the mouse would start to cut in and out. This seems to be a relatively common problem. Now, I will admit, I can be rough on my mice and I do use them a lot. However, I was hoping that the G400 would be more durable than the MX518. One saving grace is that after the problem started, Logitech replaces the mouse with very few questions asked. They just wanted to make sure that I was not having a software problem and after they determined that the hardware was the issue, they shipped me a new G400. So, I give Logitech an A+ for customer service.
Overall Conclusion
Overall, I would recommend the G400 for anyone in the market for a good gaming mouse. It has a great look and feel to it and it was a pretty reasonable price for a gaming mouse. If you are looking for a MX518 replacement, the G400 is a great and obvious choice.
