Computer Black Screen Problem

computer_help

I often help friends and family when they have PC problems. Recently, I ran into a problem with a computer black screen. A computer black screen can be a pretty intimidating issue to tackle. However, there are definitely a few things you can do to diagnose the problem. Let’s take a look at a few things you can try to do to either fix or at least diagnose this problem.

First, you need to determine if the computer is at least booting up. If it is not, then a hardware issue is likely the culprit. When you boot the computer, do you see the BIOS? Are you able to get into Windows at all before it crashes? If the computer is not booting up at all, you may get a sequence of beeps. If so, these beep codes can give you a good idea of what the problem is.  You can simply search Google for the number of beeps you are hearing and your computer type and you should find some results.

If you don’t hear any beeps or even see the BIOS, then you may need to start messing with the hardware. I would first try a different monitor if possible. Also, is your monitor plugged in correctly and is your video card sitting firmly in the motherboard? Next, you could try pulling one ram stick at a time. While inside the computer case, do you see any noticeable burn marks, any loose connections, or blown capacitors? Does your CPU look like it is seated correctly? If you just moved your PC, it could have come loose. Unfortunately, if you can’t get anything to happen, then it is really just a guess to what the problem is.

Computer Boots, at least to BIOS

If you are able to get into Windows before the black screen, then I would recommend seeing if you can get into Windows safe mode. If so, you can start debugging in safe mode. A common culprit is a virus or malware. You can try scanning for malware using your virus protection software. I would also recommend using malwarebytes as well to scan. If you don’t find any malware, ask yourself if you installed any new hardware or software recently. If so, try removing this and see if the computer black screen still happens. One more thing you can try is to disable startup programs and processes to see if this fixes the issue. If it does, then you can turn them back on one at a time until you find the culprit.

One more possible solution you can try is to log into your computer using a different account. If this works, then your user account may have been corrupted. Here is a way you can fix that.

Hopefully, at this point, one of the possible solutions above has helped you to fix your problem. Got another possible solution to the computer black screen problem? Let us know in the comments!
